So excited for the opportunity to speak at the James B. Hunt - TopicsExpress

So excited for the opportunity to speak at the James B. Hunt Library in Raleigh on October 14th for the Social Studies Leaders Institute! Im more than a little nervous...district leaders from across the state will be there and I havent spoken to a venue this large before. For the last few weeks, Ive been touching up the speech summary I have to submit. I finally finished it tonight. :) Its called Strategic Fun and I hope the topic inspires: Every student craves for fun in the social studies classroom. And every great teacher wants her students to learn. So how can these two dichotomous endeavors be accomplished in harmony? With strategic fun, we can trick our students into learning! We can bring social studies to life through fun-filled water balloon battle reenactments, virtual wax museums, geography races, marshmallow tower engineering, historical musical mixes, and so much more! Kids need to do more than just read and write about social studies. To make the learning stick, students need to get out of their seats and become historians, geographers, economists, and politicians in the classroom. They need to reenact and revive. They need to sing and perform. They need to build and experiment. They need joyful, indelible lessons that will linger far beyond the test. We dont need more bubble sheets. We dont need more standards. We just need more fun…the strategic kind.
