So far, the climate change deniers have had it easy. They have been able to dismiss people who think the sky is going to fall as fear-mongers. Well, from the mounting evidence, the good times are coming to an end. It has begun to happen even in relatively remote Western Canada. Ever since Southern Alberta became awash in record-breaking rainfall run-off, the actuaries have been trying to figure out how to write policies to cover the new scale of damage. People whose homes were destroyed in low-lying areas along the Bow River have been told they get one last bailout from the public purse. If they build on a flood plain again, they’re on their own. Scientists began warning in the 1980s that climate change would raise sea levels by now, forcing mass disruption of populations. Rising temperatures would create intense weather patterns, along with unprecedented damage. Disbelievers and special pleaders on the gravy train to prosperity have brushed aside the warnings for more than two decades. Captains of capitalism and industrialists have relied on future hype since before the Second World War to boost demand for consumer goods.
