So, finally got round to going to see X-men, Days of future - TopicsExpress

So, finally got round to going to see X-men, Days of future past. Whilst it had all that one would expect from arguably the most credible of the big-budget Marvel franchise movies : spectacular production values, superb concept realisation, clever, quirky details to delight the true comic geeks, and subtle plot devices that wove the story through the fabric of accepted history, I cant say that it was my favourite X-Men film. It received rave reviews from fans and critics alike, James McAvoy was at his emotive best as the young professor X, bit parts from the likes of Kelsey Grammar and Famke Janssen were well placed and not over emphasised, Hugh Jackman even seemed fairly plausible as he reprised his role as Wolverine, and best of all, Michael Fasbender gave his usual menacingly damaged, bravura performance as the thinking mans super-villain, to epic effect. Sadly though, the plot relied entirely on the concept of time travel and the creation of alternate reality through intervention (clues in the title, I hear you shout), and whilst this in itself isnt entirely to blame for the slight feeling of meh that the film produced, it was a big part. That coupled with the all too neat, happy, and ever so Hollywood ending, one just cant escape the sense that the story was a device to re-enervate the X-Men brand and ensure its continuation. Not a bad thing in itself, but couldve been done with a little more subtlety and panache. The last word: If you want to be entertained by a time travel story and you like the X-Men.... watch Hot tub time machine, and read some of the comics from the seventies.
