So here is my take on the Black face incident by the Stellenbosch students. I refuse to be seen as another angry black woman full of rage, because I am not. Nor am I trying to play the victim. But am I offended? Most definitely. I do not dismiss the fact that this whole saga might have been a complete not-so-innocent joke. However with a country like South Africa , which has a history of institutionalised racism but wants to create a generation of healing by discarding old racist habits, fellow human beings need to be more aware about what might be hurtful towards others. We need to remember that Black face started in a time where black people were considered less than human, an act done to de-humanize and belittle blacks. This is why black facing continues to cause pain amongst blacks.It could be that Ive completely lost my sense of humour here but at this point in time, I fail to understand how this incident could be hilarious. All I am asking from my fellow white man is a little bit of sensitivity. I no longer want to live in a country where people claim that they mean well yet simultaneously manage to offend me with racist undertones. Surely its not too much to ask... Written with the intent of love, redress and reconciliation. I do not advocate hate.
