So, how does that saying go? One step forward, then two steps back... We have been at UAB hospital with the boys in the RNICU/CCN since they were born early (a day shy of 32 weeks) on August 31st. It has been challenging, but the boys seemed to progress well with no major issues. We got wind Tuesday that the boys might be able to go home on Thursday (9th) and then were given the green light Wednesday morning. Around mid-day Wednesday the boys were both lethargic and wouldnt nurse or take a full bottle like they had been... I knew something was wrong. That night into Thursday morning they took a turn for the worse with continued lethargy, poor eating, and low body temps. With blood work, urine samples, and a lumbar puncture from Beau, it turns out they have infections. Shepp is back in the isolette due to low body temp, and they both have their feeding tubes back in. Beau has a UTI and meningitis, which is scary, but treatable. They are completely different babies from Tuesday, all because of some germs that infected them which their immature immune systems couldnt fight off. They have both done some bottle feeding today, but arent strong enough to nurse. They should both be feeling much better soon now that they are on antibiotics. Yesterday was a rough day mentally for all of us, but now that we have more answers we can move forward. Beau will be on antibiotics for 21 days and then be reevaluated, so it looks like itll be November before we get discharged. Please keep these precious little boys in your thoughts & prayers that they heal soon and that we can all go home at the end of the treatments! We still have the RMH room and will be calling Birmingham our temporary home a little longer. It was SO hard seeing them 180 so fast, but I know they will get through this and be even stronger. Pray for my strength too... I just want to crawl in bed with them.
