So if last year was the year of bats, this year is the year of birds. Last weekend I tried to help move an injured bird at the cabin and probably gave it enough adrenaline that it flew to safety. Meanwhile at home in Jersey City there is a nest under the air conditioner with a screeching baby bird for days now which has been more reliable at dawn than waiting for the alarm to go off. We have attempted to seal around the air conditioner, however the little guy was smart enough to stay quiet and hidden in the process. We have watched the mother find her way through our makeshift tape job to feed the baby. I reasoned by now this bird must be a fledgling and ready to fly after a few weeks. Again, I got my gloves and this time dug an old milk carton out of the recycling and washed it out and got a knife to cut it out to create a half-way house for it which could be hung in a nearby tree. Expecting the baby would have to be coaxed out from its quiet and clever hiding place, sure enough I was ready to catch and cupped the bird and transferred it into the half-way house milk carton. As soon as it was being hung in the tree it flew away! Oh well, to be honest this baby was more like Baby Huey as large as the mother and was ready to fly the coop anyway. Who knew this was going to be the summer of bird rescues! LOL
