So in another group that I monitor, were having a great discussion about goals. Someone asked if there are some books I recommend regarding changing your mind-- I had mentioned that in order to change a habit, you have to do something different, which requires a change in thinking to prompt a new level of awareness. Every time I get this question it reminds me of the book I need to write, but Id recommend to start, Mindset- Carol Dweck; The Emotional Life of your Brain- Davidson and Begley. In all my lectures I talk about attentional positioning. Just like you make decisions about what to eat and when to eat and how to eat, the same applies to your mind. The mind is the regulator of energy and information flow. how you perceive that energy and information is influenced by your personality, your experiences, memories, ways of being and knowing, but in a very large way, your attachment -- your sense of security and safety in the world and with others. Think of how you respond to various situations in your life and to certain people based on the way they make eye contact with you, their tone of voice, their gestures, their energy-- you get a sense (and heres where we could get into a big discussion about how to get in touch with the body and how it plays a key role in changing your mind) for what is occurring. You have this sense and then a propensity to respond (or react-- impulsively, wihtout thinking) in a certain way. By doing what were talking about-developing a new level of awareness, of your internal state and the external environment-- you change your way of viewing the world, you change the way you think, you can become more open and flexible, more adaptive, feel more integrated and stable, and react with less rigidity or chaos.
