So, interesting discussion today, thought Id pose it to you guys here: The Stolen Valor act. someone told me that it was unconstitutional. that if some random civilian wanted to pretend they were a military member, or commissioned officer, and walk around in a uniform with awards and honors that they bought, and tell people about all the shit theyve seen, they should be allowed to. now, I of course (being mil) wholeheartedly disagree. its kind of really offensive, not just to me in particular, but to all of those whove fought and died to WEAR that uniform. and to all of the people who HAVE seen some shit, and go every day trying to forget about it, instead of boasting to random members of the public. while I personally would like to drop every person who does it into the middle of a sober marine battalion after briefing them about the individual, the end result would be very illegal. so I feel that the law is fair. try and pretend youre mil for some sort of personal gain (whether it be acclaim, discounts, etc) and you get jail. makes sense to me. You can argue that its just clothing, but if that were the case, they wouldnt concoct such elaborate stories, and pretend they earned it. its what the uniform MEANS as well.. yknow? but what do you (not just my fellow service people here, but the civvies as well) think? is it unconstitutional? should we allow people to buy a MOH, a set of blues, and wear it around saying they earned them both? or should we maybe discourage such blatant disrespect towards those in the armed service?
