So it has come to this... The government feels that they can ROB - TopicsExpress

So it has come to this... The government feels that they can ROB our young entrepreneurs of their hard work, money, and entire dreams by just saying sorry, we dont like you AT THE FINAL STAGE OF DISTRIBUTION when theyve all along greenlighted the project from inception. Thats some strong integrity right there. Making a film is not easy at all. Everything from the screenplay to the production process and marketing requires tremendous skill, labour, and effort, and, with the governments pervasive censorship, well, theyve just turned the whole creative scene into a big gamble for any brave local entrepreneur who wants to try to make it big. Its a big gamble too overseas -- like any entrepreneurial pursuit -- but at least the risk overseas is merely a market one, i.e. sellability, not whether the government likes you or not. The censorship that we have to go through practically multiplies the risk of failing for local films, which already suffer poor patronage because of a small domestic market. I bet Namewee will go out of Malaysia by hook or by crook now. Theres just no way to recoup 1 whole year of wasted effort and most probably RM1 million in production budget with an official ban on theatrical distribution and even YouTube and private screenings (read Namewees recount on the Banglasia Facebook page). Who wants to start anything awesome here, if everything is subject to the governments arbitrary? The same thing happened to The New Village, and the trailer looked like it was about to become the best film to ever come out of Malaysia. Then they banned it, just because a few smart-ass politicians decided that its too communist. I bet they can bear to see us succeeding, thats why they have to shut us out through political means instead of competing economically in a free market. Namewees debut film became one of the top-10 grossing films of all time in Malaysia in 2011. Theyd be damned if he did that again. This is why I tell anyone who cares about being extraordinary: leave Malaysia. Theyll come down hard on you the moment you attain any semblance of prominence or success. Not only will they not support us, theyll try their best to suppress our success too. Thats how they work. Deal with it... by leaving once and for all.
