So its 6:30 in the evening and Im just about to sit down to my Chicken Kiev when the phone goes. Usually I let the answering machine pick up but on this occasion being distracted by said Kievs I answered it. I thought maybe it was my bi-annual call from my sister. No. After the usual Hullo silence. Immediately your heart sinks and at that stage you should simply hang up because you know its a marketing call. Perhaps because I was still distracted from staring at my tea, sitting there, grinning at me,seemingly saying, Im gonna get cold very quickly. Whatever. Hullawing a second more forceful time theres a whirr and a click and an unmistakably Asian voice asking to speak to Mr Landles. My worst fear combined. Looking longingly at my wilting Kievs, I answered Yes speaking. What do you want? My name is (cant remember his name) blah blah survey. Response. Sigh. Yes. He then started warbling on about future contact and having admittedly tuned out by this time I thought he was asking me to agree. So I said No. Well. This required a response that wasnt in his prepared oft rehearsed script. He started burbling about meaning I would be getting only the mail and telephone calls I wanted for the future. Borg like. I realised resistance was futile. I said something like yeah whatever. Thats when he really pissed me off. Maybe he thought I was educationally challenged, maybe he thought i was aurally challenged. (Thats pig-thick and corned beef to you lot) Whichever or whatever. He started shouting THIS. MEANS. THAT. YOU. WILL. ONLY GET. THE MAIL. AND TELEPHONE. CALLS. THAT. YOU. WANT. Not to be out done I answered in similar tone. YES. I. UNDERSTAND. NOW. BUGGER OFF!! followed by slam as I hung up. Clue here. When cold calling dont annoy the hell out of the person youre calling. Poor sales technique. Oh and the Kievs? Still hot enough and lovely they was, thanks
