So its finally August the 15th. This morning as I stood out on the wharf waiting for the boats to return from patrol, the sky suddenly opened up above me. Gray rainwater was seeping through the thick, coarse, material of my police uniform, and the chill crept into my bones. It was as if all the world around me were screaming sadness in a thousand different kinesthetic tongues. The sound of rain falling against the tempestuous waters of the sea created a raging cacophony of white noise. Against such a backdrop, all other sounds became curiously amplified. I heard a tinny scratching noise coming from my pocket. It was my iPod, Id forgotten to turn it off you see. Or had I? I cant quite remember. In any case its tiny little speakers were screaming bloody defiance against the din of the rain, wind , and the waves. In one boys pockets, lay a battle of wills between nature and machine. My kagepro playlist was playing on a loop. Apt, on such a day as this. I sullenly popped the ear buds in, hoping that the music would take me away from the gray, colourless world around me. I think I managed to catch the last few bars of Ayanos Theory of Happiness, before my iPod brought me to Summertime Record. I dont know how to process this. Id like to think that they all exist(ed) somewhere, and somewhen in another reality. Just because they exist inside our heads doesnt mean theyre not real, somewhere. And as I stared, with dusty eyes and vision blurred by a veil of rain, into the murky depths of Brani Wharf I swear to god that another pair of eyes looked back into mine. It was probably just a fish with red eyes. And as the sky cried this morning for the Mekakushi Dan, its tears became the worlds blindfold. And for a moment, in a way we all became part of the Dan for a moment, sheltered beneath the skys very own veil of sadness, remembrance, and blessings.
