So last night the comment came up that - TopicsExpress

So last night the comment came up that Latino/Mexican/Hispanic/Cuban or other arent a race. That those are all CAUCASIAN RACE. The Anglo-Americans have succeeded in many ways of shaming Mexicans about their heritage and their ancestry. But, I have spent years in El Paso/Mexico, and never found anyone there who considered themselves Caucasian, most are proudly Hispanic or Mexican, and very proud of it. So, what do you think, are all Caucasian? (I am adopted, so I dont know the race of my father, so I am non-anything)The ethnic, and racial makeup of all of the peoples in the Americas is somewhat collectively mixed up. The different types of people that were living together in communities throughout the New World has made for an interesting mix of people throughout. Mexico is a particularly diverse region as far as racial makeup is concerned. The original inhabitants of the region were racially similar to what we now know as Indians or Native Americans. When Spanish invaders arrived in the 16th century, many of the native population were wiped out due either to illnesses they caught from the Spanish and had no immunity to, or during battles to prevent further encroachment onto their lands. Those men who remained were typically forced into hard labor, while the women were taken as wives or concubines by the Spanish soldiers. These unions were only the first genetic combination to arise out of the newly colonized Mexico. Eventually, the African slave trade also made its mark on Mexicos gene pool. Once Mexico became a more stable European colony, more families began to arrive from Spain. They were the elite class, and typically did not intermingle with non-Europeans. That being said, Mexicans in general are not a race, but rather an ethnicity made up of various races. There are those who are mostly made up of the original inhabitants of the region, while others are some amalgamation of Native, European, and/ or African. There are also those who descend entirely from the European settlers, and would be considered white if not for their regional descent. It is simply confusing to try and clearly define the racial background of a group of people who have been so thoroughly intermixed both culturally and genetically. In Mexico, there are rarely any official classifications to define individuals racially. In Mexico, everyone is simply Mexican. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
