So long posts are a thing.... I feel like Ive been sharing a lot of political posts lately. Most (if not all) have been photos reshared from Republican (read: insanely right wing) pages that Ive offered counterpoints to. To anyone whose photo Ive shared in such a way, I want to make the point that Im not doing it to argue. Im not being snarky and sarcastic because I want to insult your intelligence. Side note: Im snarky and sarcastic in just about every facet of life, so its not surprising that it comes out when Im talking politics. But I digress.. I dont want a society where we nitpick or get easily offended. Its funny to me that a lot of people (on both sides of the aisle) talk about how political correctness has gotten ridiculous. Dont get me wrong, I partially agree. But if you share or say something that lacks facts or context or is just completely wrong, and someone corrects you, dont get offended. Theres a lot of misinformation out there surrounding political topics. But I think we need to be having smarter conversations. I dont care what color President Obamas suit is, or what kind of coffee he drinks, or whether he wore an American flag pin during that one speech. We have to stop being so narrow-minded and judgmental. Disagree with his policies all you want, but dont fill up Facebook with tiny, nitpicky details that you think somehow suggest that hes not as American as you are, because its a load of horse crap. You cant bottleneck the issues of an entire nation into he saluted troops with a latte in his hands, and that makes him an awful president. Seriously, this isnt 4th grade P.E. Instead of wasting time with childish arguments, why dont we have real conversations? All we see from Congress and D.C. is bickering and grown men and women flinging word feces at each other. This is why government is broken. This is why the current Congress is going to go down in the books as the least productive Congress in the history of the United States. Because we dont talk about anything important. Weve become entrenched on opposing sides, and were just throwing forks and spoons at each other, waiting for the other side to surrender. I think that part of the problem is a lack of solutions from the far right. The Tea Party will yammer on and on for days about the Presidents birth certificate and terror babies and RFID chips in Obamacare, but I havent seen legitimate answers to a lot of important questions, like: What is the Republican plan for healthcare? And I dont mean get rid of Obamacare, because thats not a plan. In other words, how would you have fixed the broken healthcare system that existed before the ACA was passed? How would you have changed healthcare policy to significantly lower the number of uninsured Americans? This has been a big problem for Republicans in the past few years, because their only answer to fixing the healthcare system was we dont know, but as long as it isnt Obamacare itll all be fine. Thats not something voters, especially struggling, uninsured voters, want to hear. What would be the most effective strategy for dealing with ISIS? Think about this one, because Ive heard too many Republicans say we need to just wipe them all out. Even if that was the plan, its not like every member of ISIS is corralled into one place that we can just bomb and then go eat apple pie. In order to completely eradicate ISIS in the time period that Republicans are talking about, wed need ground troops and essentially a second war in Iraq, which the American people (and countless conservatives on the Hill) have made abundantly clear that they dont want. These are just two examples of conversations that I want us to be having. Even if we disagree completely on how to answer these questions, at least well be having a dialogue ABOUT THE RIGHT QUESTIONS. Thats a start, and itll certainly get us farther than Obama is a commie, we need a military coup and a bald eagle parade! posts on my wall every other day. So please, dont get offended when someone corrects misinformation. I get corrected from time to time, but I dont take it personally. In a world of opinionated people, facts are a priceless commodity. If we start ignoring them, all hope is truly lost. Lets not do that.
