So many martial arts videos all over the Internet purporting to show self defence just... dont. Lots of applications of martial arts techniques to contrived situations, not very much actual self defence. Hardly surprising then that most people have no idea what a live situation is like, when even those purporting to be training for it apparently have no clue. It does kinda grind my gears to see folks advertising that they teach self defence when they really are not. Partly because theyre misleading people in a way that can get them hurt and more selfishly perhaps because Ive been reflecting on what I voluntarily subjected myself to in order to be able to teach actual, real, workable self defence. If I taught rubbish karate (and any karate I taught would, I expect, be rather poor!) then my students would make fools of themselves and get pwned in tournaments. People dont die of that (usually!). Teaching crappy self-defence is a wholly different matter. How much self-delusion is required before you can teach some of the crap Ive just been watching as self defence and retain a clean conscience? Gah.
