So on a late writing mission I stumbled across a documentary - TopicsExpress

So on a late writing mission I stumbled across a documentary marking the 20th anniversary of Once were warriors. Shits blown my mind. Was such an influential film for me coming from N.Z. It had a massive impact on audiences back there and on Australian audiences too just at the time I moved over here. So aside from honouring its critical and commercial success, Once were warriors sparks many pivotal and nostalgic memories for me. Both from the movie itself, and its vivid portrayal of Maori culture, but also from my life changing events around its time of release. On a side note: Allan Duff, who wrote the Once were warriors novel, started an initiative to promote literacy amongst New Zealands primary schools. I remember getting catalogues and choosing what books I wanted just off the looks of the front covers. Then sure enough, weeks later we got the books delivered to us, for free. I began reading more frequently because of this. Goosebumps and Wheres wally books or what ever looked good out of those catalogues, and I realised that I loved reading, and I read a lot more later in life out of interest and curiosity, but that initiative was a definitive starting point. I reason as to why I liked reading. I loved rap music because of how it reminded me of books and stories and how people used their words. It could be a tenuous argument, that Allan Duff has influenced my pursuits in rap music to a certain degree. So with that I leave you this doco. Full of New Zealand insight. And my heart swells with pride at the beauty and spirit behind such a dark story. Chur. https://youtube/watch?v=TggnMBEiKhQ
