So one of my favorite sayings in Jiu-Jitsu is, “The Lucky Guy is On the Bottom.” That way the student can practice working from an uncomfortable position to make sure they never have to suffer too much and so they loses the fear of being placed in bottom position if for some reason things don’t go their way on top. It’s not the easiest position to be in but it’s the best for your development. I frame it to my students that they are almost stealing another person’s training and advancing their own by leaps and bounds by choosing the bottom. I tell this to my kids’ class all the time. Last week I was doing a side control training drill where I told the kids they were going to grapple and that they could choose who is on top and who was on bottom amongst themselves. Two of my higher belted kids got into a literal verbal screaming argument at each other, “I want to be on the bottom…No I want to be on the bottom!”……. I was so proud. =)
