So, our new puppy adopters are busy preparing for their pups. - TopicsExpress

So, our new puppy adopters are busy preparing for their pups. (Some pups are still looking for homes, please take a look at our website). Leanne their foster Mum, has spent the last 8 weeks introducing the pups to lots of new people, noises, animals etc, around her home. These pups have had the very best of starts and have a fantastic base that the new owners can build on. I have written a guide for the puppy owners which covers basic introductions, training, feeding, health and more, which hopefully they will read (in between loading up on the coffee and falling asleep- I havent yet discovered the art of making my puppy guides as exciting as I want lol). Anyway, some more advice; Work with your puppy, not against it. People talk about pack behaviour and dominance, they say we have to dominate our pup and become pack leader. As humans we couldnt be more dominant! We control where our dogs live, what they eat, when they eat, where they walk, when they walk, who they see. We control every aspect of their life already, so why do we need to dominate anymore? We dont! We should work with our dogs. Make our dogs want to work with us by encouraging good behaviour. Teaching them how we want to behave. Dogs have no idea what is wrong or bad behaviour, to them it is all normal behaviour for a dog. So we need to teach them how we want them to behave, by rewarding and encouraging the correct behaviour. I hate dusting. Hate it. If I dont do the dusting and you hit me with a slipper as a result then I will cry and still hate dusting, but will do it because I am scared of being hurt when I dont do the dusting. If you give me a bit of chocolate when I pick up the duster and then give me more chocolate as I dust, then I will dust every house in this street. I am not suggesting that you give your dogs chocolate (please dont), or that you teach them to dust, but training your puppy or older dog works in the same way as teaching me to dust. Everything needs to be positive. Yay exciting walk where we are going to meet new things. Woah big scary lorry coming, treat treat treat, big lorry passes, treat buffet closes. Puppy goes, ooh big scary lorry means nice treats, big scary lorry now not so scary. We can cope with this. Pup pees on the floor? Chews your furniture? Whos fault is that? Yours!! You should be watching your pup, taking it out to toilet lots, giving it lots of things to chew on and distracting the pup to stop unwanted behaviour and giving it something else to focus on. Telling the pup off, shouting at it, BAD PUPPY, just makes it confused and a little scared... Take yourself outside, and say BAD PERSON, I will watch my puppy in future. We all make mistakes and looking after a puppy is hard. You think a newborn baby is hard? At least it stays where you put it! A puppy is like an 18 month old child, you wouldnt leave the child unattended would you? Sudocrem on the walls! Flour over the child and floor and 20 discs forced into the DVD player.... Adopters- We will always be here for help and advice, make sure you make the most of it. Ring, text, email.
