So, the General Assembly is in session. And among their pressing business? Banning the time-honored tradition of Nominating Conventions by political parties. Bills introduced by Sen. Frank Wagner and Del. Scott Taylor (SB507 and HB194) will BAN conventions! And the vote is TODAY, TUESDAY, January 21st! So, the Conventions that have been our heritage for over 200 years -- conventions that nominated Ronald Reagan and drafted the U.S. Constitution -- will become ILLEGAL in Virginia. What is going on here? It’s pretty simple: SB507 and HB194 are naked power grabs. Some elected officials fear conventions because they are grassroots-driven processes -- and therefore diminish the direct influence and control of the well-connected establishment. This is unconstitutional legislation, plain and simple. I read earlier today that Democrat Senators Saslaw and McEachin have both spoken publicly against this legislation saying essentially its an internal party matter that shouldnt be legislated. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, but I appreciate their sentiments. Please contact SPEAKER BILL HOWELL and urge him to OPPOSE HB 194. His office numbers are (804) 698-1028 (540) 371-1612.
