So the San Diego city council just voted to raise the minimum - TopicsExpress

So the San Diego city council just voted to raise the minimum wage, pending approval by the mayor (dont hold your breath). The predictable predictions are rolling out across conservative San Diego. But what you never, ever, ever hear conservatives mention is how expensive poor people are. Were going to pay either way -- either in higher public social services, or in higher wages. Id rather pay 25 cents more for my cup of coffee than see 200,000 working poor in San Diego have to rely on social services to get their basic needs met. THATS expensive, and amounts to government subsidies for plutocrats. The minimum wage isnt a perfect instrument -- nothing ever is -- but it is a necessary corrective to the capitalist dynamic of money only going uphill. Raising the minimum wage is the right thing to do. And a message for all employers: if you cant afford to pay your workers a good, living wage, take a look at your business model. Dont blame your employees or the big, bad, evil government for your insufficient business acumen. California, and San Diego particularly, is a perfect place to thrive. Find a way. Self-sufficiency is what youre always preaching. Look in the mirror. Take a note from Jimbos, Costco, Starbucks, and thousands of other employers who found a way to honor the triple bottom line -- profits, planet, and PEOPLE.
