So the fact The Book of Life still hasnt broke even is really scratching at my ankles here, I liked the movie but in an art perspective it was INSANE. I dont how effective it is to say this but when a cg movie goes out of its way to create so many tiny rendered details for the BACKGROUNDS where youll spot them or see the scene for maybe 10 seconds tops, there was so many scenery changes and yet non of that detailing had a reason to, nor did ever, cease. Consider how this detailing is made, with traditional animation you could draw a few books in a background and it there, it exists, but with CG every book has to be rendered to properly fit its atmosphere. Think much like the tiny details in painstaking stop motion films, only a tiny digital world filled with digital pieces of items. Please look at Frozen and how many generically bare backgrounds it held, going from snow, empty hall, and specifically an ENTIRE ICE CASTLE WITH NO FURNITURE IN SIGHT. And of course...some clipping, now you see Book of Life had plenty of clipping moments, I spotted at least 3 separate times, but you see thats entirely forgivable when you have so much happening on screen as well as its rich backgrounds and rendered detailing on multiple surfaces and perspectives within one scene alone , also Frozen focused on gestures when I dont think it was fully ready to handle female characters (I mean this in the way hollywood thinks females in movies need to be poised and pretty little dolls as well as having realistic detailing for some reason. if they had made anna be more exuberant with her gestures by breaking the safe molded latch they had on her, maybe the outcome would be better than watching two female characters stand around and talk in empty sceneries for an 1 hour and half) (just make a life action) If you want to talk about good gesturing and how cartoon styles in animation are taking us to new places, refer to Hotel Transylvania and how Genndy Tartakovskys designs use squash and pull physics to achieve that. The Book of Life is an extension of this fashion: the translation of cartoon styles in appropriately rendered designs (this includes shape, textures, points of animated articulation) But this is precisely what I mean, in my viewpoint, the polished appearance of a movie, is not as valued as the work of the animation mechanisms and detailing. I am far more impressed with the extra care spent into creating so many details that arent even apart of the character designs themselves (and there was symbolism out wazoo on that topic, other than being entirely ornate) than the quality outcome because that just means with /more money/ they can get that extra to spend on the fine polishing of lets say higher quality hair on the character models, more fabric textures etc etc. they can reach so much improvement to deliver the entire enchilada. summary: They can get even better, if the funding allows Basically, The Book of Life really impressed me on terms of what can be opened for the future of CG movies and that we can really be expecting more movies of beautifully stylized characters and backgrounds without sacrificing one for the other. Also as a no-brainer, more ethnicity to these movies that seem to be lacking in hollywood homogenization, as well as isolating years of culture that hasnt had as much exposure, theres still a lot of territory that can be brought to childrens movies without being racist, cause wow look they did it, it can be done and I want it to be a threat to other movies for that too. Again, Im not really touching into what the story is or its content, im just fearing this movie (which has a hopeful team who wants to make the Book of Life a trilogy) will not be as successful when its in good time to be successful. The last animated movie that came out this year was in August being, TMNT and well, Im sure a lot of people skipped that one. I applaud the team for releasing the movie a few weeks earlier than scheduled (being halloween) (and they might have sacrificed some quality to do so) because Big Hero 6 is coming out November 7th. Im going to be drooling all over Big Hero 6 and thats WHY Im glad they released it before the disney hits theaters once again, any closer would hurt those estimated sales. SO PLEASE, this isnt a movie to camrip, just go see the dang thing in its proper glory cause this is a concept that was pitched for over 14 years to get through to any company to become an animated movie (even when guermillo del toro signed for it he was told no over and over again) and if you like what you see even if its 2/3 points of interest, please support it because its vacancy in our media is too startlingly refreshing for comfort.
