So the world lost Robin Williams and Jamie Kelly, both victims of a depression so deep that leaving was easier than staying. I have had to deal with depression, not my own, but more than one family member and more than one friend. I first had to accept that it is real and the effects are in varying degrees, devastating. I then had to learn to understand the pain associated with it and the depths that it will go to without some kind of help to abate it. Sometimes the help is worse than the depression leaving the consumer in a life with no highs or lows. I also grew to understand that it may be incurable. The old bullshit sayings of get real, or get over it dont answer any of the issues for the afflicted. Compassion and understanding may be their only lifeline and they may not be enough. Certainly those who ostracize rather than empathize have missed the mark in extending a hand in a world where someone hurts so deeply. I wont pretend to have been a friend of Jamie or Robin. I knew them both from their work, which was more often than not brilliant. I cant testify to the depths of their inner sorrow. I can say that I salute them both for trying as hard and for as long as they did to hang on. I know it wasnt easy.
