So the worst example of what is awful about traditional grades happened to my daughter last week. She had a quiz in school. 10 multiple-choice questions. She missed three of the 10, one because she forgot to answer it. She skipped it and meant to go back but as kids often do she forgot. She is 10. She scored seven out of 10 for a grade of D minus. Of course I could go on and on about how ridiculous it is to put a D- on a seven out of 10. when I picked her up from volleyball practice, she was crying. She has always gotten straight As in school. Because she missed three questions on the quiz, she got a D-, and this put her in tears.I then had to explain the grading system to her and let her know that she could make up those points later and still get a high-grade, something as a irrelevant to learning as that D-. As you might imagine this was difficult for me considering how awful that system is. As often as I write about it, this was the first time that punitive grades hit so close to home. Why cant teachers understand this?
