So, theyre advising everyone in the NY (and north) areas to prepare for a nasty storm, and possible power outages for several days. They suggest thinking about how youll heat your home without power. Not everyone has generators or fireplaces. But there are a number of ways to stay warm without using any heating equipment...... except food. MOST IMPORTANT: REFILL PRESCRIPTIONS NOW..... before the storm hits. Cornbread, dried beans, chocolate create body heat. Include them with your milk, juices, whole grain breads and lunch meats, fresh apples & oranges, chunk cheeses, vitamin fortified/sugared cereals, fully cooked meats that are ready to eat, and corn chips. These will give you variety, nutrition, and help keep you warm. Plus, they dont have to be cooked, so you dont need to leave the warmth of your sleeping bag or blankets to put together meals. (Have paper plates on hand, too) Check the net for heat-producing foods that people on special diets can eat. Toss a box of similar supplies, along with a heavy blanket (preferably wool,) into your car, in case you have to be out on the road. You might also include some of those self-warming gloves.......... but theyre probably sold out by now, so just toss in some extra heavy wool socks for your hands and feet. If you find yourself in dire straits and no sign of help in sight, remember, you can actually cut the foam padding from your seats to protect your feet and hands. (Better to lose a car seat than fingers or toes, right?) Heres something that no one ever thinks about. Have you ever had no heat (coal furnace burned out at night, or power shut down your heat, etc)? You can survive in every other area, with few complaints, if youre prepared. But you absolutely DREAD sitting on the cold toilet............ but nature does call, ya know. So, if you lose your power, take a couple throw rugs, blankets, or whatever, and cover the closed toilet to keep the cold air from reaching the seat. Move it when you have need, then be sure to replace it. I love preparing for extreme cold....... its so easy, with a little thought. Its the miserable heat out here that you just cant prepare for. If your power goes out, youre screwed......... only option is to go to a public place with AC. UGH!! Give me a nice, long blizzard any day. lol Well, the suns coming up, so Im off to make coffee and get this day started. Stay safe. Stay well. Stay warm. Good luck to all of you who are in the path of the cold weather system. ttyl
