So this is how we (The European Library, the brave ones as a colleague of mine said, hahah!!) did the #ALSIceBucketChallenge.. We used the chain reaction or domino effect or however you want to call it! :D At this point, because there is a lot of ignorance out there about this challenge, I would like to add: 1) A lot of people dont know what is ALS so this a short description of the disease --> als.ca/en/node/63 2) This video shows how the challenge started --> https://youtube/watch?v=hfyegAJ-THE 3) Some are complaining about the fact that the ALS Foundation spends only 27% of donation in research.. Well here is an interesting point of view that we should consider --> tinyurl/l82dhpk 4) Others are complaining about water being wasted.. I will give you an example that a fb user posted and its quite impressive: About 1.2 million videos have been uploaded for the Ice Bucket Challenge. Lets overestimate and say that every single person who has done this challenge has used three gallons of water. Thats 3.6 million gallons of water used. That might seem like a lot, but to put it into perspective, the average pool carries about 25,000 gallons of water. Lets underestimate and say 20,000 gallons per pool — again, just for good measure. Thats the equivalent of 180 pools being dumped on people. Lets overestimate again and call it 200, just to prove the point here. With over 615,000 swimming pools in Arizona, 200 pools is about 3-hundredths of a SINGLE percent of the water ONLY in pools and ONLY in Arizona. For added perspective, it would be the equivalent of taking 6 gallons of water out of one of those 25,000 gallon pools. So this is an indication of how small the amount is used on this purpose. 5)My point of view : Some people say What is the purpose of the Ice bucket challenge and why not just donate?. Well I think it brings people together and its an interesting way of educating people! Personally I didnt even know what ALS is before this era of #ALSIceBucketChallenge came.. About the waste of water, I believe water is never wasted when it is used as a fuel for something so positive! Nothing is wasted when you give hope and help! Thanks for your reading! :) (y)
