So this last weekend I was at a gaming convention. Go Play Northwest is one of the most relaxed and inviting cons I have ever been to. While most of the attendees are veteran gamers they are very welcoming to new folks. GoPlays focus is on story games. These games can be challenging, not so much in their rules but in the emotional spaces they can lead you. As an example of this one of the games I played was Grey Ranks. It takes place during the Warsaw uprising of July 1944 and you play teenagers who are the support personnel for the Home Army. While the subject matter is grim there is a great deal of satisfaction in exploring the feelings of someone fighting for there freedom against overwhelming odds. Of course there is plenty of lighter fare as well at GoPlay. Friday evening I played in a light and silly sci-fi game called Lasers and Feelings wherein we were crew members of a starship battling evil aliens. This con is on my permanent list of annual events and I would love to see some of my regular gaming friends make the trip to Seattle next year to check it out.
