So this morning i learned about Salish. Hearing this song sung in Salish reminds me of the fact that music speaks a universal language of its own, because i can recognize this tune in any tongue. More importantly, im now aware of Salish, a linguistic label that ive never heard of before. The fact that Salish is spoken in Canada, where i live, and ive never heard of it before now seems linked to the extent of cultural suppression, and even erasure, of native North American culture that has a occurred on the continent.
