So tired of hearing about how these public sector employees are owed these lavish pension plans and benefits because of the alleged trade-off of not making as much as they could have made in the private sector over the years. That is hogwash. At one time, that MIGHT have been the case. But study after study has shown that a lot of public sector workers actually get paid MORE that in the private sector. And where the private sector does get paid more, it is generally because they WORK a lot longer (nights and weekends and summers). On average, the federal worker works 153 fewer hours a year and a state/local worker works 187 fewer hours a year than the private sector. So when there is a slight pay disparity, that is the cause. So the fact that they deserve these early retirements with lavish pensions because they were the poor overworked workers for their entire career is pure rhetoric. If you want to argue that it is due them because of contractual obligations, that is one thing. But stop perpetuating this myth that this is their reward for long years of no money. And be honest and point out that public sector workers should face the same risks as private sector ones if their employer goes insolvent and has to restructure and void some prior promises that it can no longer afford to live up to.
