So to help you understand the new testing: it goes like this:...... STR or short tandem repeats: took a tiny section of DNA and hunted for short sections that showed repeats....So in your regular DNA testing results: you will see for example that at space 383 our Pierre has a section with 13 copies........Why we care is this: it means that every single male on the planet who also has 13 copies at that location share some common ancestor somewhere back in time........so Pierre has something in common with the population who carries 13.......In this case: we know its primarily a more modern accident of nature and usually only in those with a history that also involves the Alps: and radiates outwards......This tells us Pierre was not Chinese for example....Well by the time we test up to 67 markers: we collect more and more data\; and we get to refine it to he had Alpine Celtic ancestors.........so clearly he isnt say Greek: at least not recently.
