So very many new faces at Vets today. Of the 13 tent requests on my list, I only know three of the folks. And those 13 requests came in AFTER we had already given out six tents. This is only in the course of 90 minutes on one day. These were only the people who happened to be at Vets today. Tuesday morning, well see a whole different crop of people. Its frightening. Whit and I walked out of Vets in a mild state of shock. I mean, we meet new people all the time but not 19 tents and 20 sleeping bags worth of new people! One young couple, that was clearly new to homelessness, didnt even know what to ask for. Thresa Fahr Hansen brought them over to me for help. They ever so quietly asked for a tent. They didnt know to ask for a sleeping bag to sleep on or a blanket for warmth or a tarp to keep the floor dry or a flashlight for nighttime. They didnt know what services are available or where to find them. They didnt know anything about being homeless. We shouldnt have to teach people how to try to survive homelessness. I wish everyone had to sit face-to-face with someone experiencing homelessness and listen, just once. This entire country needs to shut its trap and JUST LISTEN.
