So what happens now? If I had to guess political forces on both sides may now seek to exploit the two families here. Both families have a long road to healing and will obviously need prayer. I would guess there will be a civil case, where the threshold for proof is much lower. That will keep tensions surrounding the case high because you can bet those representing the Martin family will be all over the media in advance of those proceedings. Zimmerman is probably going to have to move and assume a different identity altogether. I would also guess this case will have political reverberations in Florida in the 2014 mid-terms. For example, Republican Governor Rick Scott was already vulnerable, upsetting conservatives for being soft on several issues and being targeted by Democrats. Scott will be put under the microscope here, and is probably in a no-win scenario. Anything he says will either be considered a betrayal of conservatives who supported Martin on self-defense grounds, or a betrayal of minorities in the Democrat base. And if anyone on the prosecution team had any future political aspirations, as many prosecutors do, best to cancel those. In fact, might be best to put out some private practice feelers come first thing Monday morning.
