So who is the greatest player thats never or seldom mentioned in MLBs most hallowed quintet. Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb, Honus Wagner [though time is fading his star more & more], Williams, Mantle, Mays, Walter Johnson, Bonds, Aaron are the most frequently cited as the All-Time 5 Tops. It seems to me that Rogers Hornsby is the most overlooked, yet eminently qualified. Hornsby won 6 straight Batting titles. In that same stretch, he also led in OBP, SLG, OPS, & OPS+]. Three different seasons, he hit .400. Hornsby is one of only 3 2nd basemen, all-time, to hit 40 HR in a season. He won 2 MVPs. Yet Rogers Hornsby is the name mysteriously missing, I find, in Who was the greatest? arguments. Ask the question: Who ranks second on the all-time MLB B list? Ive heard baseball fans toss out 100 guesses to that question without mentioning Hornsby, yet Hornsby ranks 2nd, right behind Cobb & right ahead of Shoeless Joe. Is anyone else more qualified as Baseballs Most Frequently Forgotten All-Time Great?
