Socialist FAQs. Comments? Q. What is the difference between nationalism and internationalism? A. Nationalism is a movement that coincides with the development of capitalism and the oppression of a politically, economically and militarily weaker nationality by a more powerful one. Quite often, it is the better-organized national capitalists who lead the national struggle for emancipation from the oppressor nation. But sometimes, the working classes of a nation assume the leadership role, in which case, the nationalist struggle becomes internationalist and leads to People’s Republics or Socialist states. Internationalism is the idea that the struggle for the emancipation of the working classes has no borders; it is an international movement. The gain of the working class in one country is the gain of the working class of another country, even if the ruling classes of the two countries are enemies of each other. This is because Capitalism exploits and oppresses the whole world. Therefore, the emancipation of the working class must be a global phenomenon, with the working classes of all countries uniting on their common agenda to overthrow their own exploiters and forge a bond of brotherhood.
