Sock monkeys were the original sock toys, remaining a fixture of American folk art today. Stuffed animals became popular as the awareness of exotic species grew, coinciding with the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1932 the distinctive red mouthed sock monkeys were made from the red heeled work socks manufactured in Rockford, Illinois. The hard times of the Great Depression meant that mothers recycled socks into toys for their children.
