Solemnity of the Birth of John the Baptist Read: Isaiah 49:1-6; Acts of the Apostles 13:22-26; Luke 1:57-66. 80 Everyone finds life tough going at some point. It may be that the plans they are tying to work out seem to be going all wrong, or the dreams that they had for their life are not working out as they had hoped. It may be that some illness or suffering has come into their life, but everyone at some point knows frustration and a self-doubt about their own worth or ability to achieve what they want, or simply whether or not their whole endeavour is mistaken or not. The trust in God doesn’t necessarily mean that we will get through these tough times unscathed or that if we trust in God all our plans will eventually work out, or that our suffering and loss will magically get better. Our trust in God more often than not leads us somewhere new, somewhere we had not thought of. More often than not it changes us and makes us a better person, in the sense that we are more compassionate and generous and loving. But we more often than not fight every step of the way, because it is not how we saw things working out, perhaps not even how we wanted things to be. Trusting in God doesn’t necessarily get us what we wanted, but if we are willing to follow his lead, then we will find happiness and peace in this life and the joy of eternal life to crown it all.
