Some 109 prospective diploma and degree holders registered at Nakuru Teachers Service Commission offices following a call for trained teachers to apply to fill vacancies left by the striking teachers. Speaking to the Nation in his office, Nakuru County Director of Education Patrick Nyagosia said they were surprised by the availability of many graduates who were jobless. Mr Nyagosia pointed out that 87 primary and 22 post-primary teachers had already submitted their applications by mid-day Wednesday. He said they had to turn down others due to low qualifications. He said some retired teachers had also turned up but the age barrier set at 45 years disqualified them from being allowed to take part in the exercise. Work on contract Retired teacher Peter Muheria, 63, called on the government to consider retired teachers to work on contract when the need arose. Some 300 teachers in Kirinyaga County on Wednesday ditched the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) for the rival Kenya National Union of Teachers. The secondary school teachers flocked the Kerugoya Knut office to apply for membership, saying they were “fed up with Kuppet”. They were received by local Knut branch executive secretary Harrison Gichira. The teachers, who said they were on strike in solidarity with Knut members, filled forms to join Knut. The teachers accused Kuppet of calling off the strike without consulting them. Seek views “The national union officials should have sought our views before telling us to resume duty and entering into any pay deal with the government,” one of the teachers said. Mr Gichira said he was impressed by the move by the defectors and assured them that their interests would be protected. He said Knut was growing stronger and called on other Kuppet members to join it. He asked the government to honour the 1997 pay deal.
