Some athletes have the ability to strive for perfection in everything they do. Watch them ply their trade and they are sticklers for performing skills and exercises with meticulous execution. That focus on doing it right makes them dangerous in crunch time situations. How does one athlete separate themselves from others? Attention to detail during practice and training workouts. Watch them work. Their technique is flawless, their performance of an exercise clearly defined from start to finish, and an uncanny ability to make the necessary corrections when things are not going as planned. So, Im perusing a website that is depicting squats and cleans. Clearly, the athlete performing the skill is no where near the correct depth on the squat or the clean. When they need to be powerful at the end range of motion they will be coming up empty handed. You are what you repeatedly do. If that same athlete had lessened the weight and focused on depth and range of motion they would have gained strength and flexibility. The same is true with wrestling techniques, running form, and any other exercise used to strengthen and improve your body. Done incorrectly and you build up a wall so high and thick you many never succeed at your desired task. If I can do one thing to help an athlete that would be to create honest self assessors. Why is this so important? If you cant see or realize that something is not done correctly or well then you can never reach your full potential. Until you can accurately self check your work then youre probably spinning your wheels or an example of someone who defines insanity: doing something over and over again without creating positive change. If you cant self check yourself then seek someone you trust who can help you get over that proverbial hump. Otherwise, you will surely end your career with disappointment. There are some helpful tools that you can use on a daily basis to enhance improvement. First and foremost, video. The camera wont lie and you may be startled by what you see. Ive performed some skills, both in the gym and on the mat, that I thought were performed correctly. Instead, upon viewing the workout, I was humbles at my poor form. But, once you acknowledge that something is not right, you can begin to make the necessary changes. Furthermore, when you can make honest assessments and create growth the next time your in a similar situation you can immediately address the issue, make the necessary changes, and move forward at a much quicker pace. Im always leery of defensive people. They are the most difficult to help and wind up falling short of their goals. Everyone needs help to move from point A to point B. You will be no different. Exact excellence in your workouts and find yourself reaching your goals! Tomorrows workout: 30-20-10 Thrusters burpee/pull-ups technique: rock and roll half nelson series-five minutes on each area 1. far wrist and half, drive 2. far wrist and half, drive, then steer/pull over your thighs 3. far wrist and half, drive, feel resistance, stack the half over his head (tuck chin their chin into their chest)
