Some exciting changes are coming to our school district. This message will provide you with more information on the new high school schedule, as well as adjustments that have been approved by the Board of Education to the school calendar, which includes the elimination of “early release Wednesdays” from the schedule. New High School Schedule: In an ongoing effort to present as many educational options as possible to students, significant adjustments have been made to the high school schedule beginning this upcoming academic year. To help you and your family plan accordingly, here are some details on the new schedule and how it will impact your student: The new high school schedule, which has a start and end time of 7:30 AM to 3:01 PM each day, is a “modified block schedule.” First and foremost, it will allow for far more flexibility for students, allowing them greater access to the classes that they need and want to take. It also allows the district to fully align itself with new upcoming state graduation guidelines. The new schedule consists of a mixture of eight-period days and blocks and will allow for a tremendous amount of new opportunity for students as we continue to offer them the best possible educational experience. The creation of this new schedule has been a long process. We are thankful to the many parents and students who offered their feedback at the community forums that were offered. Special thanks also goes to the members of the “Thompson 2 Life” task force, which helped the district move along in this process in their work in developing work force readiness opportunities for students. Revised School Calendar: Another significant change involves the newly revised academic calendars, which eliminates “early release Wednesdays” throughout the district. A total of six professional days have been formally added to the schedule. On these days, students will not be in school. These dates in the 2014-2015 school year are currently scheduled for: September 19, October 16, January 5, January 20, April 20 and May 22. The elimination of the early release schedule will ensure that there will be an increase in the number of student contact hours with staff. *** These are indeed significant changes for our students, parents and staff members. However, the district is confident that the modifications to the high school schedule and the school calendar are positive changes that will enhance student learning options and allow staff members to better optimize the educational experience for all students.
