Some extracts from Obamas Brussels speech below, where he says that during the Iraq war America tried to work within international laws and the Crimea issue must be also addressed through international law, and that big countries should not bully smaller ones. No mention of the fact that the Iraq war was totally illegal and that more than half a million people have been killed there since the US-led invasion. No mention of the illegal drone strikes that kill many innocent civilians throughout the Middle East. Over 90% of those who voted in the Crimean referendum voted to join with Russia. Russia didnt have to drone bomb a single Crimean citizen to achieve this. There are times when I want to admire and respect Obama for much that he has to say but his blatant hypocrisy and dishonesty gets in the way of that. Why would anyone want to admire a man who sits by while illegal drone strikes kill innocent people? A man who supports the mass surveillance of us all? A man that promised a truly transparent administration? A man who says that other countries must uphold international laws while he himself breaks international law without batting an eyelid? The emperor has no clothes. -------------------------------------------- These are difficult issues and it is precisely because these questions are hard that they must be addressed through constitutional means and international laws, so that majorities cannot simply suppress minorities and big countries cannot simply bully the small. Russia has pointed to America’s decision to go into Iraq as an example of Western hypocrisy. But even in Iraq, America sought to work within the international system. We did not claim or annex Iraq’s territory. We did not grab its resources for our own gain. Instead, we ended our war and left Iraq to its people in a fully sovereign Iraqi state that can make decisions about its own future.
