Some free online classes my quantitative-minded compatriots might be interested in: Financial Engineering, though Columbia. Im in. Basically an analysis of derivative securities. This is math rich, so youll need calc, stats, and linear algebra as a background; the programming you can do in Excel or whatever else youre comfortable with. Most engineering students dont touch this, so its probably a nice change in perspective and application. Well see. https://coursera.org/course/fe1 Analytic Combinatorics, through Princeton. This is probably more for the math majors, and I dont have enough background in algorithm development for it. But a fascinating pure math subject area with practical applications, taught by the man who developed the subject in the first place. Check it out. https://coursera.org/course/ac Nanotechnology, through Rice. Ive been looking forward to this for a few months. Any ChemE or MaterialsE/S major should strongly consider it (its my ChemE majors sub-emphasis). Maybe the most significant emerging area within the discipline. Anyone in engineering or chem right now has a sufficient background, and its only 4 weeks. https://coursera.org/course/nanotech
