Some general tips on composition and layout in digital renderings: _Use the rhythm, line-up images, the repetition of elements such as shape, colour, tone, line and pattern to unify the different areas of the composition. However, there must be variety in repetition (the broken pattern) or the image will become static and boring. _Good balance allows the viewer’s eye to travel easily across the sequence of images. Create balance by giving both small and large elements equal emphasis, creating the variety of shapes in light and dark tone, large and small scale. If well organized, it will support the centre of interest. _ Unity and alignment create visual relationships between different elements in the composition. However, too much unity and similarity can result in an uninterested design. Ideally, the viewer focuses first on the centre of interest and then naturally follows the composition in a cohere manner. _Harmony is the engaging arrangement of all the individual parts of the composition, united by a concept, theme, unity of colour and other design elements. Of these choices, colour is most commonly used to create harmony and create mood or emotion. Analogous, complementary or limited colour palettes are the most harmonious, but may fail to appeal for the design savvy. To create juxtaposition and add excitement, use of the unusual colour combinations, such as raw naturals with acid pastels or other strategies that will create interest and a true sense of novelty. _Eye flow and composition depend on each other. If composition fails, eye flow is lost. Use sketches to explore and establish a foundation for creating movement and flow. _ In a successful composition, symmetry and asymmetry must work together. A good composition will use both concepts. Both order and the imbalance of parts will create a tension that uses the imbalance to move the viewer through the composition. Used together, symmetry and asymmetry create a flow and rhythm through the layout. Create and enjoy!
