Some have drawn similarities between Zwarte Piet, the heralder of Christmas in the Netherlands and Belgium, and Haji Firuz, the iconic face of Nowruz. Both appear in blackface, accompanying a old, bearded, white man (Saint Nicholas and Amoo Nowruz) during their holiday seasons. Both are also widely described as having faces covered in charcoal, despite the widespread evidence that in fact the images are meant to represent Black individuals. Zwarte Piet traditionally comes on December 5-6, while Haji Firuz is associated with the Nowruz holiday in March.
