Some lines from my blog about the condition of ponies and horses at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. : Way back I had decided to write on this topic. The rate for ferrying visitors to the shrine from Katra by ponies is a whopping Rs 2000 per one sided trip. This means Rs 4000 per day as the ponies make a return trip daily. You can estimate the amount earned by the owners but still the condition of these ponies is pathetic and worry-some. The conditions in which they live is too poor to explain. No cleanliness and no lighting. The condition of fodder and water is also not good. Whenever the ponies get slow in the way upside, do you know what they get? Not water or rest but they are beaten by the sticks held by the owners. Many of them slip in the way due to the tiles and are badly injured but no special treatment or dispensary is available nearby. More than 2 crore persons visit the shrine every year and some of them must be the workers of NGOs like PETA and other who cry for animal welfare and Maneka Gandhi has also visited the shrine many a times but they come, see and go back and forget all this. Why dont they do something for these animals who are being treated so badly. Rest you can read in my full blog.
