Some of my students this year didnt seem to understand the facts relating to those seeking asylum in Australia. They had a very rigid concept that the boat people were terrorists, or that they were here illegally and that they were taking money from Centrelink. I showed them a short film about refugees I co-wrote with fellow law student Sarah Southern. I showed them episodes of the series Go back to where you came from. I wrote up succinct notes that encapsulated the legislation, the protocols, and the international conventions Australia is a signatory to. I devised a group task where they had to match terms with the correct definition. I think ONE student understood, in a real sense. I think thats about the ratio that understands in the Government, too...sadly.
