Some of the members, particularly those in the Ipswich area and surrounds, may not know about the Ipswich Good Food Co-op that was set up in August 2012 and operates every Tuesday night in The Ipswich Thistle Pipe Band Hall, in Limestone Park. Basically there is an annual fee to become a member, round about $35 I think, and you put in a $50 balance to shop, buy your produce each week, and top up your balance to maintain the $50. This is used to purchase the goods for sale each week. There is no box system, or compulsory amount to purchase, you just get whatever you want, when you want. All the food is organic or chemical free, and sourced as locally as possible. Each week there is a very good selection of fruit and vegetables, breads, fruit juices, teas, milk, cream, cheese, yoghurt etc; and also regular buys of dry goods such as flours, nuts, sultanas, raisins, olives etc. There is also a refrigerated van outside that sells locally raised meat products. Any members who grow their own produce at home, or in community gardens, and who have an excess at any time, can sell it by arrangement, with a % commission to the Co-op to help running costs. It is worth a look see just to see what is being done in the area to promote locally grown, healthy produce, with low fuel miles, and meet like minded people.
