Some of the real issues that I see driving the #CancelColbert online burst: 1. Jokes about Asians = #saferacism for comedians in America. Would there even be debate if Colbert or another white comedian used the N-word and did a caricature of African American cultures? 2. #RacistSatire can be a shield behind which #saferacism is still used to make racist jokes about speech, culture, and facial features -- as Colbert did towards Asians. 3. Colberts #saferacism actually hurts. We in Asian and South Asian American communities have actually suffered real world pain, insults, exclusion, and even violence from a climate of cultural dismissiveness. My family has. I personally have. I dont personally take the #CancelColbert hashtag as a literal demand. But I have to admit that as a result of this example of #saferacism, it feels harder for me to watch or enjoy Stephen Colberts show. And that is a loss. #Saferacism is still #racism.
