Some of you have already seen this- I posted it as a comment in You Know Youre From West Phoenix...duh... I repost it here for those of you Wessonites { ;>) } who may have missed it- Plus, it will give me the opportunity to correct a typo in which I referred to Bro. Roger Yadon as a sin-in-law! (Sorry about that Bro. Roger!) While doing some much needed deep cleaning of my downstairs work shop, I came across a couple of CARRIERS! All of us know that that was the monthly news magazine of West Phoenix UPC. Sis. Corene Holmes Wesson wrote a monthly column entitled: In His Courts. In honor of her and to mark her passing, I will share with you that column from March 1970. The welcome mat is out to every one of our new-comers and visitors as always. We were happy to meet Sis. Willow Yadon’s parents, and her sister from Osceola, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Davis and Susie. I don’t think I have to say they were glad to be here, not because it is Phoenix, but because their daughter and son-in-law are here. We hope they come back real soon. We were glad to see Bro. Art Akers again from Tucson. Of course, Bro. Akers is not stranger to us around West Phoenix. Bro. and Sis. Akers and Cindy are really one of our members, we are just leaving them in Tucson for a while. Maybe the next time Bro. Akers comes back to Phoenix he will bring Sis. Akers and Cindy with him. We were happy to see Sis. Lohnes’ brother and sister in law visiting again in Phoenix. They have an addition to their family since the last time they were here. We hope they will come back again real soon. I’m sure Bro. Denny Holman will mention Youth Week, but we do want to mention how much we enjoyed having Bro. and Sis. Castillo and family with us. Bro. Castillo was our special speaker for Youth Week, and we did enjoy his messages from night to night. We hope that they will come back again- even if it was for just a week, we feel like they are one of us. While we are on the subject of Youth Week, we might mention a little bit about the banquet that was held on Saturday night of Youth Week. If you were privileged to be in the under 35 age group and attended the banquet you saw some beautiful dresses. It was a formal banquet, and most of the gals wore a floor length dress. There were blues, pinks, greens, reds, whites, etc. Most of them made their own, but they really came up with some nice ideas. It sure proved that you don’t have to wear make-up and dress like the world to look nice. The guys were all dressed up in suits and ties. Bro. David Albers did his “Dog Barking” again. He had an extra special attraction to this one, barking like a seal! He does pretty good, I will admit! Bro. Howard Hooten Jr read a very touching poem, and Bro. Castillo was speaker for the evening. Bro. and Sis Wesson and Bro. and Sis. Castillo were special guests. Bob Akers was awarded the award for Conqueror of the Year. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the banquet. February 21 was a very important day to a certain couple in West Phoenix. Last month we helped them celebrate. Bro. and Sis. Johnson have been married a couple of years...well, maybe a little more than five or ten. One Wednesday night we said more than Happy Anniversary to them. After service we had a get to gather for them where we had cake and punch and a small gift for them. While we’re talking about the cake, that was a beautiful thing, and was baked and decorated by Sis. Christine Alexander. It was a four tier wedding cake, and it was totally lovely, and it was good too! Well, back to the Johnsons, we presented them with an ice crusher and some money to go with it. Hey- we say again to the Johnsons, Happy Anniversary Bro. and Sis. Johnson, and may you have many, many more of them! On March 1 some friends got to gather in the annex and had a pot luck dinner for Dean Gallagher. The occasion was a special one, Dean had retired the week before. May we say congratulations on your retirement, although we know this will only be the beginning of a new venture, even if it is the end on one. We want to say congratulations to someone else in this article. Bro. and Sis. Denny Holman received their notice that they have received support for a Christmas For Christ Church. They will be leaving in June for Norfolk, Virginia where they will start their new work. Anyone notice how happy Eddie Johnson has been lately? Well, he has a good reason to be! He and Pat became the proud parents of a darling baby boy, Jimmy Duane Johnson. Jimmy really became #1 in a lot of ways. He was Eddie and Pat’s first child, he made Bro. and Sis. Johnson Grandma and Grandpa for the first time, as well as Sis. Mary Del Lowe. Then Bro. Green becomes great Grandpa for the first time! (That’s Sis. Johnson’s father, if you didn’t know). Wanda and Mary Del’s daughters become aunts for the first time. Well, congratulation to all concerned. I imagine little Jimmy will be well taken care of since he is #1, don’t you think? We want to welcome Bro. and Sis. Sisson and daughters Jean and Debra as well as Sis. Sisson’s mother, Sis. Thornburg to West Phoenix. They all just moved to Phoenix from New Orleans, Louisiana, where they attended Bro. Cupit’s church there. We are all glad to have you, and hope you will feel right at home here! Sometime last week, I picked up the phone... waited for the dial tone... dialed a familiar telephone number... telephone rang twice, then I hear a familiar voice talking. Then I realized something was different about this voice. My uncle was talking, but he was saying something like this: “This is Pastor Wesson speaking, would you leave your number and name, and we will call you when we get home.” The message wasn’t exactly like that, but that’s close enough. It happened to be a tape that takes the message for them. You might say the we are really getting modern! In some way, maybe but not in our services. I think that this is a real good idea and one that our Pastor should have had a long time ago. This way Monday can be their day off for certain. Next to the telephone this is the best invention yet. Well, I think I did pretty good- came up with more information than I thought I had. If I forgot anything, pray for me and I’ll try to do better next month. Have a Happy Easter, and enjoy the lovely March spring, warm weather!
