Some people hold to certain translations of the Bible, specifically because they sound more holy, more reverent. But the Bible was NEVER meant to sound lofty. It was meant to convey the heart and plans of God. Lofty-sounding spiritual material does not equate to either understanding it or making it from the Spirit of God. Read the Bible, and ask God what His Word is to us personally. When we come up against a religious word or phrase in our reading [of the Bible or of a spiritual book] or in some religious context, no matter how precious it may be to a certain translation or body of believers, if it conveys a meaning and a spirit other than the meaning and Spirit of Jesus Christ, then we must reject it. We do not worship language; we worship the living God, who assures us that His word to us is life. John 6:63 --John Eldredge, Walking with God, 2008 Understand that Johns reference to conveying a meaning and a spirit other than the meaning and spirit of Jesus Christ, he is relating that language that is high brow and more difficult to read does not make it what God wants you to read. God is more interested in your ability to understand what Hes saying than sounding religious. Here is an example: Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Sounds pretty, doesnt it? But pretty is not important. Instead, how about this direct translation: So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law. Dont miss the message because you are tied to what was once an easy-to-read and understand language. Its more important to hear God speaking to you.
