Some people think because I am a hunter and trapper that I must be some sort of blood thirsty killer that hunts and traps just to kill animals. It might look that way to the mislead or misinformed, but I hunt and trap to keep wildlife numbers in check and below carrying capacity. I only remove animals I feel need to be removed. Here is a perfect example. Saturday morning while checking my coyote sets I found this otter. What an otter was doing so far from water I do not know, but he was in one of my coyote sets. Some people would think I just dispatch everything in my traps, but thats not the case. The state of AL requires me to keep a catch pole so I can release any non target or out of season animals. Now I dont know if you know much about otters, but they are very tenacious and have sharp teeth! They also have short legs which means when I held him with the catch pole his mouth full of popping teeth was only about a foot from eating me up. I released the otter from the trap and then released him from the catch pole and watched him run off down through the woods. Im not ashamed or feel I need to hide what I do. In fact, I am very proud of what I do. You see, just because hunters and trappers harvest wildlife doesnt mean we dont have a deep respect for all wildlife.
