Some preachers get their illustrations out of books. Though I occasionally do that, most of the illustrations I use in my sermons are from real life experiences. I find that such stories help people relate the Bible to real life. God often uses what seemed like a random event as a teachable moment to me, and then to those I share the story with. Over the years Ive collected 46 such stories that had particular meaning to me. Ive shared them on my blog or in sermons, or both. Back when I was recovering from my colon cancer surgery, and needed something to occupy my time, I started editing those stories and compiling them into a devotional guide, which will be released in August. It is called The Heavenly Mundane: Daily Devotions from Ordinary Experiences. Please join me in praying that the book will be a blessing to people struggling to connect their faith to everyday life.
