Some sad news. I spend the afternoon and evening at the Rugby Pub helping Chef Don do some renovations. Jack Mauer showed up a little later and during my several coffee breaks Don, Jack and I sat at the bar telling jokes and old stories. Jack got a call tonight from Christina. Now those of you who played with Crescent City Rugby Club will remember Christina as Jacks girlfriend Bonnies daughter. You will also remember her because she was the only kid at the after game parties at the Basin Lounge. And I suppose she was as much a part of the team as anyone. I know that at that time I was not the only player with almost no sense of responsibility; enjoying an extended adolescence, many of us would have been taxed to care for goldfish. But Jack took it upon himself to help Bonnie in the raising of young Christina. Although Jack and Bonnies relationship ended, Jack and Christina have remained close and he still refers to her as his daughter. If you can believe it Christine is 40 years old. Tonight she called grief stricken. Her 18 years old daughter Britany was in a bad car accident in Shreveport. A second call confirmed the worst; Britany was killed. One minute Jack is laughing and the next choking back tears. Life can be so short, so unfair. Please keep Jack, Bonnie, Christine, and Britany in your prayers.
